On Breaking Loops

Someone close to me was inside depression for a long time. There was nothing I could do for them. When you can't do anything, you grab whatever is within reach. I grabbed the brain. In depression the hippocampus atrophies, the amygdala goes hyperactive, the gray matter of the prefrontal cortex thins, they say. Reading sentences like that did not make their mornings any lighter. But I did salvage one thing from between those sentences: that depression is a problem of time before it is a problem of structure. The same thought travels the same path over and over, the path deepens, and in the end no other way is visible.

Hebbian learning — "neurons that fire together wire together" — is a principle of learning and memory, and at the same time a principle of fixation. A thought is like thread: once tangled, it tightens on its own.

Unable to reach the person, I made the loop visible instead. Hundreds of threads are born, each with its own DNA — length, speed, color, motion. Frame by frame they turn slightly, sense one another, sometimes entangle. When two threads flowing side by side draw close, they wind together like a double helix and move as one; offspring are born, the parents' traits mix, and across generations the distribution of color drifts. When two collide head-on, the one with less energy dies, and an afterglow lingers at the site before seeping into the background. There are attractors, too — an invisible gravity that pulls threads in and traps them in orbit. A captured thread changes color, drains its energy fast, and dies if it cannot escape. But the attractors are not eternal either. When they have nothing left to hold, they vanish on their own, and in that moment what was bound scatters loose.

Since Conway's Game of Life, complex patterns arising from simple rules have been explored countless times. This work sits in that lineage. But what I was after was not emergence itself — it was the experience of watching it. When you can't reach in, watching is all that's left. Stare at the screen long enough and you see a color lineage flourish and decline, threads gather and disperse, spirals and clusters surface and vanish. It was only a few rules repeated, and yet, strangely, it was a comfort. But it was the comfort of the one watching. To the person inside the loop, even this screen would have been one more distant landscape.

Back then I held onto this: that even what looks complex is only a stack of small rules, and if you change the rules the outcome changes; that if the loop of depression is a product of neuroplasticity, then plasticity in the other direction is possible too. And I wrote this piece hoping that if they read it, some way might come into view.


Now I know: a map drawn from the outside cannot be handed to the person inside. The very stance of stepping back to look down at the structure is the first thing the loop takes away. I drew a picture of the exit and held it out, but a picture was not what they needed.

Time passed, and the person came back. What pulled them out, I don't exactly know. Time, the people nearby, medication, a few mornings that arrived a little less heavy. There was no moment where I intervened, dropping in a new thread with a single click. In the simulation I am a god and can add a thread whenever I like; the actual me sat outside it, one of many threads drifting nearby. Nor did the attractor come loose because someone cut it. It vanished once it had nothing left to hold, and what was bound scattered — it was written that way in the rules I had made, and yet I couldn't believe the sentence, and kept looking for a way to click.

The one sentence I got right in this piece was the least dramatic one. Depression does not disappear completely. Its proportion simply shrinks among the other patterns. To break a loop was not to erase it but for other paths to appear around it, one by one, until the loop was no longer everything. Mostly it wasn't I who carved those paths. I only stayed nearby — and there were times when staying was enough.


The simulation has no termination condition. Even after extinction new entities arise, and the world goes on. I used to not know whether this was a limitation or a feature. Now I think it's a feature.
